Genital Herpes

Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases.  In addition, any sexually active person can get this STD.  Many people that have it do not have any symptoms but it can still be spread to a sexual partner. There are two viruses that can cause herpes.  Those viruses are herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2).

There is oral herpes and that is caused by HSV-1.  These are usually cold sores or a fever blister on or near the person’s mouth. Also, many people are infected with oral herpes in childhood from non-sexual contact with saliva. In addition, oral herpes can be spread from the mouth to the genital through oral sex. Genital herpes is known to be very common in America. Stats have revealed that 1 out of 6 people from the age of 14 to 49 have genital herpes.

The Spread Of Genital Herpes

This type of herpes can be transmitted through vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Oral herpes can be transmitted from saliva from a herpes sore. Also, you may get herpes from a sexual partner who may not even know they have it. They may not have any visible sores or visual cues but they can still transmit the disease. Now there are areas will you will not get herpes from such as toilet seats, pools, or bedding.

The best way to prevent them is to not have any form of sex. Ways to help reduce risk are to have a long-term safe relationship with just one partner. The use of latex condoms will also reduce the risk of transmission. If your partner does have herpes, make sure they are using their anti-herpes medication every day. Avoid sex during an outbreak.
