Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is when too much of a type of bacteria in the vagina. This bacteria will upset the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina. This condition is common in women from the age of 15 to 44. Sexually active women are how most women contract the bacteria. In addition, multiple sex partners, douching, or new sex partners can lead to BV.

Women who rarely have sexual intercourse rarely contract BV. Also, you cannot contract it from bedding, swimming pools, or toilet seats.

Prevent Contracting Bacterial Vaginosis

While doctors are not 100% certain on how BV is spread, there are some steps to help prevent it. Of course, the first option is not to have sex. Next, if you do, limit the number of sexual partners. Also, stop douching and finally, use latex condoms while having intercourse. If you are pregnant, BV can cause premature birth. Make sure to seek treatment right away.

There are signs of bacterial vaginosis, but sometimes there are no signs at all. One of the signs is a gray or white vaginal discharge. Also, there may be pain, burning, or itching.  In addition, there may be burning when urinating or a strong fish-like odor.  Finally, you may also experience itching around the outside of the vagina.

Bacterial Vaginosis Treatment

If you suspect you have BV, first see a doctor. Your health care professional can perform the proper tests to help diagnose the problem. With proper antibiotics and medicine, the symptoms will go away. If you do not get treated this could lead to more complications. It will increase your chance of HIV if you have sex. Also, it could lead to a premature birth if pregnant. In general having, BV will increase the chance of contracting other STDs.
