Monkeypox is a virus that is spread through sex or close person-to-person contact. The early signs of Monkeypox are flu-like symptoms. These include swollen lymph nodes, fever, headache, exhaustion, and body aches. Next, people develop a rash that looks like pimples that can be itchy or painful on their anus, penis, vagina, testicles, or labia. The Monkeypox vaccination is a way to protect you from exposure. Here are five reasons that you should get the Monkeypox vaccination.

  1. You may have had exposure to someone with Monkeypox.

The CDC recommends that you get vaccinated against Monkeypox if you have been in close contact with someone who you suspect has been exposed to the virus. Since the virus is spread outside of sex, any close skin-to-skin contact can expose you.

  1. You fit the high-risk demographic.

Certain people are at a higher risk of getting the Mpox virus. If you fall into the following demographics, the CDC recommends getting the Mpox vaccine.

  • A man who has sex with men or a transgender or gender-diverse person who meets any of the following conditions:
    • Has multiple sex partners
    • Has A new diagnosis of any STIs
    • Recently had sex at an event or venue
    • Recently had sex at bathhouses
    • Recently had sex at sex clubs
  • People who recently had a previous or current sex partner get diagnosed within the last two weeks.
  1. You’ve had sex with someone apart of the high-risk demographic or you are not sure.

Things happen. If you are not 100% sure about who the person has been in contact with or what activities they might engage in, you should get the vaccine.

  1. You want to be proactive.

You want to take charge of your health and be proactive. You don’t want the virus and you are still avoiding contact with people with the Mpox virus. You want an extra layer of protection. Being vaccinated helps to stop the spread of the Mpox virus and keeps you protected.
