On November 15, 2024, in the heart of Norfolk’s Park Place, the Purse for a Purpose event came to life at the YWCA, despite some major challenges. Heavy rain had flooded the area the night before, leading to notifications from volunteers and attendees that they wouldn’t be able to make it out. But despite the storm’s aftermath, the turnout was solid, and the spirit of community prevailed.
Rising Above the Weather
Even with the flooding, we had nine dedicated volunteers on hand. Our team included three amazing YWCA staff and volunteers, two members from the Norfolk Alumnae chapter, a B.O.P.P. volunteer, and some last-minute recruits—my sister and nieces—who stepped in to help keep everything in order. It was a true family and community effort.
But this wasn’t just about handing out purses and calling it a day. Our goal was to create a meaningful experience where we could empower women, have important conversations about health, and answer questions in a safe and welcoming environment. We wanted to ensure it wasn’t just a “snatch and grab” event but a place where people felt heard and supported.
Meaningful Conversations and Community Connections
One of the most rewarding parts of the day was connecting with people who came by, including two men who were picking up purses for their mom and sister. These interactions reminded us that caring for loved ones is a community effort, and everyone plays a role in supporting health and well-being.
During setup, I had the chance to meet Mr. Demarko, a youth and teen mentor in the area. He expressed interest in organizing a future event focused on health and testing for the youth he works with. He even gave me a tour of the local library space he volunteers at, showing me where private screenings could take place. We exchanged information and are excited to plan something impactful soon.
Additionally, I connected with Krystal Blue-Brown, the Norfolk Alumnae International Awareness Chair. We’re looking forward to partnering again for National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day in February, this time collaborating with Union Mission. These connections are just the beginning of more opportunities to make a difference together.
Giving and Gratitude
Although we only handed out 10 of the 100 purses we had stuffed, the remaining purses won’t go to waste. We left a crate of purses and a bag of sandwiches with the YWCA staff to distribute as needed. I also dropped off additional bags and food at Union Mission, ensuring the donations continue to reach people who need them.
Even better, we still have three boxes of underwear generously donated by Victoria’s Secret, along with at least 75 more stuffed purses. This means Purse for a Purpose will keep giving, and our outreach will continue to make a positive impact in the community.
Moving Forward with Purpose
Reflecting on the event, I’m incredibly grateful for everyone who showed up, helped out, and weathered the storm with us. It was a day full of resilience, heart, and the kind of community spirit that reminds us of why we do this work. As MASS (Minority AIDS Support Services), we remain committed to empowering our community and spreading awareness, one event at a time.
Stay tuned for more updates, and join us as we keep making a difference together!
Thank you for your continued support and love. Until next time, keep spreading kindness and empowerment.
